Performing a Urinalysis

A urinalysis is a test that is routinely performed on a ward, and can provide information on the:

• condition and function of the urinary tract
• presence of pathogenic organisms
• presence of nutrient material
• presence of systemic disease unrelated to the urinary system
• acid–base (acid–alkaline) balance of the body.

A urinalysis must be performed on a freshly voided specimen of urine.
