Administering Oral Medication – Liquid

Medication is most commonly administered via the oral route. There is a multitude of forms of oral medication, including but not limited to tablets (which may be swallowed or chewed) and wafers (which may be placed under the tongue to dissolve). The prescribed form depends on the medication and the client.

In certain circumstances, oral medication may be prescribed in liquid form, most commonly for:

• paediatric clients
• use with PEGs and nasogastric tubes
• clients with swallowing difficulties.
