Removing a Nasogastric Tube (NGT)
7650 STUDENTS ENROLLED
There are two main indications for nasogastric tube insertion, namely drainage of gastric contents and enteral feeding.
When the indications are no longer relevant, the medical officer (MO) or surgeon will decide when the nasogastric tube can be removed. Nurses are responsible for this procedure.
Removal of the nasogastric tube must be documented on all appropriate charts, for example progress note and fluid balance chart.
