Assisting a Client to Clean Their Teeth
The goal of assisting a client to clean their teeth is to maintain their oral hygiene and comfort, and to maintain their dignity and enhance their independence.
Prior to commencing the procedure, it is important to check the client’s care plan to ascertain:
- preferences for teeth cleaning time
- type of teeth/oral cavity cleaning required (e.g. toothbrush or oral swabs)
- any medical factors impacting on cleaning the oral cavity and
- the client’s ability to participate.
While cleaning, it is also important for the nurse to observe any changes to lips, mucosa, tongue, teeth or dentures, and to report these as per organisational policies and procedures.
